Chased by a powerful communist official, Gregorz Firenko, a promising young boxer from Warsaw, flees Poland with his beautiful wife, Zula, seeking freedom and realizing his dream of becoming a great fighter in America. Ultimately, Gregorz becomes a champion, but his astounding success accelerates Zula's retreat into loneliness and despair. Gorgeous and courageous, Zula turns to drugs to quell her restlessness and becomes a shell of her vibrant self. As Gregorz's glory days come to an end, both husband and wife must fight the hardest battle of their lives: finding a reason to keep on fighting.
